Specimen
As visitors on Tiohtià:ke (“Montreal”), we used this type specimen as an opportunity to center the Indigenous land and the Indigenous peoples it belongs to through a land acknowledgement.
Since the typeface uses the name given by settlers, the content of the type specimen contextualizes its ongoing colonial history without erasing the Indigenous peoples. Given the size of the Arabic-speaking population of Tiohtià:ke, these sheets act as a tool to normalize using the Indigenous name of this land and the language of land acknowledgments in Arabic.
